Nothing like heading into some wild traffic to learn how to ride a scooter. It’s just like the airport taxi driver said.

“Driving in Bali is like a Video game.”

Yea, except life doesn’t have a respawn option. Other than that little caveat the description is pretty spot on. In one word, WILD.

With the apparent lack of road rules, even the basic of lane. Chaos seems to be the order of the day. The trick seems to be to stay loose and to just go with the flow. Even when this means adopting the sidewalk as a scooter lane during rush hour.

Also, sonar is a legitimate driving tool down here. With a friendly honk of the hooter to draw the awareness of those around and sometimes, I suspect, to simply say hi. I tried it, it made me smile.

All in all, not a bad place to learn how to drive a scooter, if you’re into baptism by fire.
